Charles Ernest Grassley is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Iowa, first elected in 1980. A member of the Republican Party, Grassley previously served in the Iowa House of Representatives (1959–1975) and in the United States House of Representatives (1975–1981). He chaired the Senate Finance Committee from January to June 2001 and from January 2003 to December 2006. As of January 2015, Grassley was the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is again United States Senate Committee on Finance chairman in 2019. When Orrin Hatch's term ended on January 3, 2019, Grassley became the most senior Republican in the Senate. On November 14, 2018, Grassley was nominated by the Republicans to be President pro tempore of the United States Senate for the 116th United States Congress to replace the retiring Orrin Hatch.
