Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States from 1969 until 1974 and the only president to resign from the position. He had previously served as the 36th vice president of the United States from 1953 to 1961, and prior to that as both a U.S. representative and senator from California.

Author Quote
Adlai Stevenson Our nation stands at a fork in the political road. In one direction lies a land of slander and scare; the land of sly innuendo, the poison pen, the anonymous phone call and hustling, pushing, shoving; the land of smash and grab and anything to win. This is Nixonland. America is something different.
Bob Dole I tried to make the point to the [Nixon] White House that, as a party, we needed to demonstrate that we cared and were concerned about votes from African-Americans and Hispanics. I don't know where we lost track after Abraham Lincoln.
Carl Bernstein Entering the presidency, Nixon knew he had a terrible secret to hide that could be ruinous..
Lyndon B. Johnson Your actions were treasonous.
Tom Charles Huston Making sensitive political inquiries at the IRS is about as safe a procedure as trusting a whore. Since the administration has no reliable political friends at IRS. We won't be in control of the government and in a position of effective leverage until such time as we have complete and total control of the top three slots of the IRS.
H. R. Haldeman Reg meetings – dirty tricks dept. use of power of WH more ruthlessly in deadly battle – use all weapons.
Tom Charles Huston I suppose this [Watergate] is an example of the dangers of letting down your guard against increased executive powers–no matter what the circumstances. Not that the danger was not real, but in this case the risk of the remedy was as great as the disease. There was a willingness to accept without challenge the Executive's claim to increased power. That's why we acted as we did, and it was a mistake.
Tom Charles Huston Frankly, I wouldn't put anything past him [Nixon] and those damn technocrats. You can't begin to compete with the professional Nixonites when it comes to deception.... If Nixon told them to nationalize the railroads, they'd have nationalized the railroads. If he'd told them to exterminate the Jews, they'd have exterminated the Jews.
Roger Ailes ... infiltrate and neutralize the mainstream American media.
Murray Kempton Mr. Nixon … will, with time, be a landmark in the history of quiet, determined desperation.
Daniel Yergin The United States must face the uncomfortable fact that its goal of “energy independence”--- a phrase that has become a mantra since it was first articulated by Richard Nixon four weeks after the 1973 embargo was put in place--- is increasingly at odds with reality.
Richard Rovere Nixon appears to be a politician with an advertising man’s approach to his work. Policies are products to be sold to the public - this one today, that one tomorrow, depending on the discounts and the state of the market. He moves from intervention to anti-intervention with the same ease and lack of anguish with which a copy writer might transfer his loyalties from Camels to Chesterfields
Dick Tuck Welcome Nixon! How About the Hughes Loan?
Helen Gahagan Tricky Dick
Dwight D. Eisenhower If you give me a week, I might think of one.
Mort Sahl Nixon's the kind of guy that if you were drowning fifty feet off shore, he'd throw you a thirty foot rope. Then Kissinger would go on TV the next night and say that the President had met you more than half-way
Daniel Ellsberg I asked myself … what could I do to help end the war if I were willing to go to prison? Now it wasn't at all clear that putting out the Pentagon Papers, which I thought would send me to prison, would be one of the better things I could do. It was history. It didn't prove what Nixon was about to do; it only suggested that he might do the same as all these other presidents.
Daniel Ellsberg We were lied into both wars in every aspect - the reasons for going in, the prospects, the length, the scale and the probable costs in lives and dollars
Michael Beschloss Nixon’s wife was featured at the nominating convention. They were trying to give Nixon a little bit of humanity which was a very difficult thing to do.
Margaret O'Shaughnessy Heckler When you undermine faith in a system, your child may not necessarily see the difference between the politician who is no longer respected and the policeman, the teacher, the parent.
Robert Kennedy Kick him in the balls!
H. R. Haldeman The president does not like you to take an opposite view at a cabinet meeting, or say anything that can be construed to be mildly not in accord with his thinking.
Frank J. Shakespeare Without television, Richard Nixon would not have a chance. He would not have a prayer of being elected because the press would not let him get through to the people.

Adlai Stevenson And distasteful as this matter is, I must say bluntly that every piece of scientific evidence we have, every lesson of history and experience, indicates that a Republican victory tomorrow would mean that Richard Nixon would probably be president of this country within the next four years…. I say frankly, as a citizen more than a candidate, that I recoil at the prospect of Mr. Nixon as custodian of this nation’s future
George McGovern Nixon would have been better off if I had won
David Frye I accept the responsibility but not the blame. Let me explain the difference. Those who are to blame lose their jobs. Those who are responsible do not.

Harry S Truman He’s one of the few men in the history of this country to run for high office talking out of both sides of his mouth at the same time and lying out of both sides.
Samuel J. Ervin Jr. Evidence that has surfaced has cast a black cloud of distrust over our entire society. Our citizens do not know whom to believe, and many of them have concluded that all the processes of government have become so compromised that honest government has been rendered impossible.
Eric Halphen People who make off with large sums of money escape justice or get insignificant sentences, while the thief who steals a handbag … gets six years…. In the United States, Nixon quit for far less.
Johnny Carson No more Nixon jokes. He is a sick man and we just can’t do that.
John Steinbeck I think the boy [Richard Nixon] should be attacked, but frontally, not obliquely. . . . Reference was made to lampoons and satires in times past. What we did not discuss was whether they were successful. Did Swift ever win an election? . . . The more I think of it the less convinced I am that it is a good, meaning effectual, plan at all. We need direct attacks-- kidney punch zingers, like “Nixon plays both sides of the gutter” or “Part Boy Scout and part scorpion” … All of these are dirty, but as I said, the man who tries Queensberry against gutter fighting is going to get the hell kicked out of him.
Stanley Frankel Reveal Richard Nixon … lay him and his motives bare … destroy him in his shot for the Presidency.
Billy Graham I don’t think you’d call the President political.
Jeb Stuart Magruder Although I was aware they were illegal. We had become somewhat inured to using some activities that would help us in accomplishing what we thought was a legitimate cause

James Reston He inherited some good instincts from his Quaker forebears, but by diligent hard work, he overcame them.
Henry A. Kissinger … we do not suffer in the world from such an excess of friends that we should discourage those who feel they have a special friendship for us.
Hunter S. Thompson Some people will say that words like ‘scum’ and ‘rotten’ are wrong for Objective Journalism — which is true, but they miss the point. It was the built-in blind spots of the Objective rules and dogma that allowed Nixon to slither into the White House in the first place. He looked so good on paper that you could almost vote for him sight unseen. He seemed so all-American, so much like Horatio Alger, that he was able to slip through the cracks of Objective Journalism. You had to get Subjective to see Nixon clearly, and the shock of recognition was often painful.
Hunter S. Thompson Who gives a fuck if he's lonely and depressed down there in San Clemente? If there were any such thing as true justice in this world, his rancid carcass would be somewhere down around Easter Island right now, in the belly of a hammerhead shark.
Hunter S. Thompson Richard Nixon has never been one of my favorite people anyway. For years I've regarded his existence as a monument to all the rancid genes and broken chromosomes that corrupt the possibilities of the American Dream; he was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena and the style of a poison toad.
Norodom Sihanouk Everyone knows now that it was Nixon who wanted me liquidated. For a long time, the Americans dreamed of doing to me what they failed to do against Fidel Castro during the Bay of Pigs incident.
Enver Hoxha Considering the Communist Party of China as a sister party and our closest co-fighter, we have never hidden our views from it. That is why on this major problem which you put before us, we inform you that we consider your decision to receive Nixon in Beijing as incorrect and undesirable, and we do not approve or support it. It will also be our opinion that Nixon's announced visit to China will not be understood or approved of by the peoples, the revolutionaries and the communists of different countries.
W. Averell Harriman I will not eat dinner with that man [Richard M. Nixon].
H. R. Haldeman An investigation of the Kennedy assassination was a project I suggested when I first entered the White House [in 1969]. I had always been intrigued with the conflicting theories of the assassination. Now I felt we would be in a position to get all the facts. But Nixon turned me down.

Bill Rogers has got — to his credit it’s a decent feeling — but somewhat sort of a blind spot on the black thing because he’s been in New York. He says well, they are coming along, and that, after all, they are going to strengthen our country in the end because they are strong physically and some of them are smart. I should say this, that Pat doesn’t have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her that she would look good in anything. One other thing I probably should tell you, because if I don’t they will probably be saying this about me, too. We did get something, a gift, after the nomination. A man down in Texas heard Pat on the radio mention the fact that our two youngsters would like to have a dog and, believe it or not, the day before we left on this campaign trip we got a message from Union Station in Baltimore, saying they had a package for us. We went down to get it. You know what it was? It was a little cocker spaniel dog, in a crate that he had sent all the way from Texas - black and white, spotted, and our little girl Tricia, the six-year-old, named it Checkers. And you know, the kids, like all kids, loved the dog, and I just want to say this, right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we are going to keep it. Oratory, Discussion & Debate

My own appraisal of him as a man is somewhat mixed. The one fact we can be sure of is that he has those indefinable qualities which make him a leader of men. Whatever we may think of him he is going to be a great factor in the development of Cuba and very possibly Latin American affairs generally. He seems to be sincere, he is either incredibly naïve about Communism or under Communist discipline—my guess is the former and as I have already implied, his ideas as to how to run a government or an economy are less developed than those of almost any world figure I have met in fifty countries.
