Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford Jr. is an American politician of the Republican Party who served as a U.S. Representative for South Carolina's 1st congressional district from 1995 to 2001. Sanford was then elected Governor of South Carolina from 2003 until 2011. He ran again for the US House and served from 2013 to 2019. He was defeated by Katie Arrington in the 2018 Republican primary, who lost the general election to Democrat Joe Cunningham.
